DIRTY LIFE

Because we want new members. Lots of new members. As many as we can possibly get. This is the world Claire, Avery, Jack, Jake and Johnny come from. YOU KNOW YOU WANT TO PLAY WITH THEM.

1. What is Dirty Life/DL, then? DL is often used as an acronym for 'download' or 'down low'. Like, keeping it on the dl. Or, I'm going to dl this movie!!!! However, that hasn't got anything to do with Dirty Life, which is a roleplaying game established on LiveJournal in 2004. It also goes by DL.

2. What is the premise? Vague urban fantasy. Well, less-than-vague urban fantasy. The difference between this and actual urbfan fantasy is that fantasy < humanity, so we only have roughly 1/3 supernatural characters, and plot is evenly distributed amongst a lot of different things. It's not really a game--it's a world. People can live wherever and there aren't 'main characters' everyone knows, unless they're some sort of minor celebrity, but even then not everyone knows them. The point is that, as long as it's within the rules, you can create plot along almost any sort of theme.

3. What is this fantasy? Because fantasy is my fave/I fucking hate fantasy/I expect an explanation in a post such as this! The fantasy is purely original, devised by the players and mods. No, really. We use terms that most people know, such as angels, demons, etc., but we have this huge-ass history to explain why (ie, those aren't actually 'technical names', more like pop culture references), and we have reinvented a lot of elements. There aren't slayers and other worlds and all of that. There isn't a heaven, hell, god or devil. Or any gods. Its pure function is to operate as though it could be real. Christians are still Christians and have no reason to believe otherwise, etc. Humans don't know and have no comprehension. They, ultimately, can't understand the supernatural parts of the world. Not even all supernatural beings know there are others. It's not like HP's Muggle vs. Wizarding world. There is no second government or inside secrets. It just is what it is.

So, yeah, we keep fantasy as a lesser aspect. The game was not created to encompass any fantasy what-so-ever. It was a private, basically slash-based game for three of our original characters, who left the first game I helped create/mod, <lj comm=a_field_sable>. Honestly, if you hate fantasy, it's pretty easy to ignore it because the real world kind of just goes on as it is. If you don't hate fantasy, it's easy to use it constantly. MENTAL, I KNOW. Imagine the flexibility!

4. What are the creatures, then? We've got angels, demons, vampires and lycanthropes (which should really be therianthropes, because we're cooking up werewolves as another aspect completely removed from anything lycanthropy-related). But mind you, we've reworked 99% of what is "known" through legend and myth, so you'll need to familiarize yourself. Which is easy to do. I'll address it later.

5. Gameplay, explain the gameplay! It's your normal third-person/journal roleplay on LJ. The difference is that the LJs are LJs, not paper journals, and your character can choose not to use it if he/she wouldn't have one (then the journal would be used for third-person roleplays, which are required).

6. Is there an age limit? No, no age limit. The game allows all ratings and subject matter, so apply with discretion if you're underage (though, two of us were underage when we created it, and until recently, we still had underage players, so we really judge on writing maturity).

7. What isn't this game about? Oh, I dunno. It kind of evolves with its current players. I'm loath to say that there isn't a direction this game should not go in for two reasons: 1.) It could go in a direction we hadn't thought of and the direction might suck, 2.) We don't want to bar potential awesomeness. But I will say, for the sake of anyone who seriously wants to know, that there are some aspects of the RPG world that this game just doesn't generally encompass:

A.) Gratuitous and frequent violence/death/destruction/permanent scarring! Not that we frown on it or anything, because we so fucking don't, it's just that DL isn't 99% angst anymore and we kind of like it that way.

B.) All-PWP, all the time. NOW BEFORE I SOUND LIKE I'M ONE OF THOSE ANNOYINGLY PRETENTIOUS ANTI-SEX ROLEPLAYERS, fuck me with a stick, I'm so not. I love sex RPs. Love them. I used to do them on a daily basis, sometimes multiple times a day. Burnt myself out as if I was really having sex... Whatever! PWP is fine. We allow it. Love it. Thrust ourselves upon it. We're just not going to be confused with those short-lived bandslash RPGs that are only about sex and drugs and the glamor of being complete idiots. Dirty Life was never like that, even when it was more slash-oriented. We still RPed daily activities and had serious elements. So it's not a lighthearted sort of, I WANT TO HOOK UP WITH EEEEEEVERY CHARACTER thing. Unless, you know, that's who your character is. In that case, more power to them. Just don't honestly think they'll be successful. I mean, they might. I don't know.

C.) Completely supernatural-based. Now, you know, it's hard to avoid it when you play a supernatural characer. Obviously. Which is why we have limits! We even have math equations so we can calculate them somewhat accurately. I say somewhat, because they're probably not. But all giant plots need not ride on the backs of flying angels!

8. How does one find out more information/how to apply? We have a wiki. The wiki is located here: [link] Our website is under construction, so please visit the wiki because it literally has everything there is to know about the game and its characters. It has the rules, the application information, the fantasy information, the FAQ, etc.

9. What if I have an original character from another game and I want to join with it? If its canon doesn't conflict with DL (such as if she isn't a supernatural species that doesn't exist in the game), you can bring in other original characters. We'd prefer non-fandom original characters. Solidly original ones from original universes. If they are a canon-based OC, just wipe their history clean of the fandom and they can certainly be applied. This question should go in the FAQ. Why, I think I will put it there now! Or, after I post this!
